🏆Today we are madly obsessed with early achievement. We celebrate those who explode out of the gates, who scorch the SAT, get straight A’s in AP courses, win a spot at Harvard or Stanford, get a first job at Google or Goldman Sachs, and headline those ubiquitous 30-under-30 lists.
如今我們瘋狂追捧着年少成名的故事。我們推崇那些從起跑線開始就一路領先的天才,他們高分搞定SAT,用無數的A串起成績單,獲得哈佛或者斯坦福的錄取名額,畢業之後第一份工作就入職google或者高盛,並且登上那些漫天飛舞的“30位30歲以下的俊傑”榜單。
👀But precocious achievement is the exception, not the norm. The fact is, we mature and develop at different rates. All of us will have multiple cognitive peaks throughout our lives, and the talents and passions that we have to offer can emerge across a range of personal circumstances, not just in formal educational settings focused on a few narrow criteria of achievement. Late bloomers are everywhere once you know to look for them.
然而年少成名的案例注定是個例,而非常態。每個人發展成熟的速度是不一樣的,我們人生中都會有數個認知水平的巔峰期,並且我們的才能和熱情也會在各種各樣的個人境遇中得到激發和釋放。正式的教育流程着眼於用很少的幾項評判標準來選拔優秀人才,因此並不是所有人都得在那個體系裡一展宏圖。如果你仔細找找的話,你的身邊一定有許多大器晚成的人。
🗣Recent research suggests that we need to modify our understanding of how people mature from adolescence to adulthood. Between the ages of 18 and 25, most people are still living in a volatile post-adolescence. In both adolescent and young adult brains, the prefrontal cortex—the processing center of our frontal lobe—is the last part to fully develop, and it is responsible for complex functions such as planning and organizing, problem solving, memory, attention and inhibition.
我們此前用於定義青少年長大成人的標準,也許需要修正一下。最近的研究表明,大多數18-25歲之間的人群仍然處於情緒波動較大的“後青春期“,青少年和年輕人的大腦中,額葉的資訊處理中心——前額葉皮質是最晚發展完全的部分,而前額葉皮質所負責的是人的計劃及組織能力、問題解決能力、記憶力、注意力和自控能力。

臆測
人工智能(AI)一日千里,當大家在擔心某些工種被AI取代的時候;你有沒有想過你的工種被消失之前,你早就被取代了?
我們這一代的hiring process跟幾十年前已經不一樣:我們都不過是一塊data。數碼化令所有東西愈不經人手,上網報名,一項項填資料,上載機器能scan的履歷,寫不知人還是機器讀的personal statement/quality questions,再做SHL之類的online assessment。有些mentee/讀者pm我問如何tackle video interview;老實說,我不知道。我不是career coach,我的年代也未有這個玩法。
搞了幾天的online application,覆對了三千次為求完美;最後hit "sent"的爽不到半天就收generic email被光速reject。I know how that felt, bro. 我大學時代每年也經歷十來二十次。
無他的,因為我們天生都check不到對的boxes。
這是一個efficiency的追求:在最短時間和最低人力成本希望過濾最多candidate的能力,所以要set一些通俗的門檻:例如要Ivy league, Oxbridge所謂的target schools畢業,GPA 3.5+,有internship/scholarship/leadership的keywords等。背後有assumptions例如認為入到Ivy league再3.5+畢業是人中之龍,做過大行internship等於有能力。當中可能有flaw,例如沒有account for當年某原因那Ivy某科特別易入,某些科特別易A (application process很少要upload整個transcript),中六七入到magic circle/U仔internship是靠人際關係等。
Assumptions are far from perfect,也令很多好人才埋沒了(退後一步,這不就是衍生出贏在起跑線的概念嗎?),但這一切也算是相對客觀條件。Checked all boxes之後就(終於)對人interview,因為說到底,見面才是真章。
但Hirevue這類技術出現,見人之前又多了個assessment,human touch更少assumptions更多。很多rule base的algo:好Sales應該要每秒眼睛有多少開合,雙眉接起多少次會掉了生意,嘴角上場24.56度比較有善,一分鐘一百二十個字聽起來太硬銷- 我相信一定有箇中的科學根據,但是否硬道理?據說有個Stanford AI Research讀你的臉就可以取決於你是否同性戀、反政府,表徵吻合就可以决定一切?立即殺無赦?If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck?
我明白在這個世代效率很重要。Benefit of the doubt很奢侈,大家也要一擊即中。推再遠一點,這根本是新時代優生論:出生不對,長得抱歉,沒有高質的upbringing,就請認命;現在就連笑得不合格也要認命。Hirevue這樣的技術十分出色,可以一步到位減省無謂的human intervention。但背後的assumption很重要,主宰公司請什麼人及未來。我大概信這個system和product output,但我很難信輸入assumption的人。正如我相信G2000有如此大的供應鏈,可以做到很好的QC;但我真的不會去G2000 Black做Made to Measure,因為我信不過的不是make那個,而是measure那位人兄。
我不反對AI,更支持AI的creative destruction去取代某些不應再浪費人腦資源的工作。再者沒有建設性的結論,也沒有改變的法門。我怕的是搞AI的跑得太快,某些有資源的既得利益者把有利的assumption放進去:什麼是好與壞、優和劣的價值觀被利益滲透,這樣的AI衍伸出的未來只會離原意愈來愈遠。
不只為何,每次思緒來到這也想到廿年前Gattaca𥚃的Jude Law。不論你如何完美優生,生下來就注定上太空;一個意外廢了雙腳,這麼born for a purpose的社會更容不下不再完美的你,而抑鬱的你也只可以用盡剩下的力氣爬進火爐把自己活焚。
